Spring Practice Sesshin
Mar 30, 2024 — Apr 05, 2024
In this sesshin, we will study the teachings of Vasubandhu, the great Fourth Century philosopher who brought us the philosophy and practices of Yogacara. We will approach these teachings from a practitioner’s viewpoint, examining how the teachings and view of “consciousness only” can support us in compassionate engagement with our moment to moment experience.
Sesshin literally means ‘gathering the heart/mind’. It is an intensive, multi-day Zen meditation retreat with a consistent schedule that creates a deep, quiet container for practice. Each day consists of sitting (zazen) and walking (kinhin) meditation, service and chanting (liturgy), formal meals in the zendo (oryoki*), personal interviews with the teachers, work practice (samu) and physical practice. We observe Noble Silence throughout and support each other in quiet, whole-hearted practice. It is recommended, although not mandatory, that you have participated in at least one day-long retreat (Zazenkai or Bodhidharma Day) before you sit sesshin to prepare yourself for this very deep and intimate practice.
